Athlete Continues Playing Hockey Despite Spinal Cord Injury

You can never plan for a serious accident nor can you easily prevent the injuries that can follow. But what you can do is take your new situation and turn it into something positive. That’s what we hope our readers here in El Paso will consider after hearing the story of a man who turned his disability into an inspiration for others.
While some people may think that the Winter Olympics are over, some know that the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games have just begun in Sochi, Russia where those with disabilities will compete for medals of their own. It’s in these games that our Texas readers will hear about the story of a Canadian man who isn’t letting his disability stop him from playing the sport he loves: hockey.
The 31-year-old suffered a severe spinal cord injury in 2006 during a motocross event. The injury has left him with complete paraplegia, which means he has lost all functions below the point of his injury. Prior to the accident he had enjoyed playing hockey — a sport he might have thought he would never play again, let alone in the Olympics. But two years after the accident, he started playing sledge hockey, an adaptive form of the sport, and now has the chance to be an inspiration the world over.
Although readers of our blog know the importance of getting compensation for catastrophic injuries after an accident, they also know the importance of hearing inspirational stories such as the man above. It’s this hope that often carries on after a personal injury case has been settled and can also help a person just as much as compensation does.
