Icy Roads Make For Dangerous Travel Across Central Texas

On behalf of Lovett Law Firm posted in Car Accidents on Thursday, January 30, 2014.

When most of our readers think of snow and ice, they generally think of states across the Midwest or in the Northeast where wintery weather is prominent. But when it comes to those conditions here in Texas, it’s a rare sight that can result in numerous motor vehicle accidents.

Many of our readers here in El Paso can see this happening across much of Central Texas this week after it was hit with a wintery mix that has created slippery road conditions and has made travel incredibly dangerous for even the most seasoned of drivers. Texas police say they have responded to at least 274 auto accidents and believe that there have been more than 300 in total. Emergency responders from Austin-Travis say they have responded to roughly 100 collisions and in Williamson County, police say that four people have already been transported to the hospital because of injuries suffered in several accidents.

Because Texans don’t usually see icy conditions like this, most drivers find themselves woefully unprepared, especially when it comes to using safe driving practices. Everything that drivers take for granted — how fast they are going, the distance it takes to stop and how close they are to the driver in front of them — can all become factors in a serious motor vehicle accident. And as we can see from several of the crashes above, some can even result in serious injury.

Though most people will blame road conditions as the ultimate cause of a crash, in some cases negligence may be a factor as well. In these cases, accident victims may want to seek compensation, especially if the crash resulted in injury. Although it’s unclear if any Central Texas residents have filed claims at this time, with more than 300 crashes in the area, it’s possible that we could see a number of them pop up in the weeks to come.
