Truck Safety for Drivers Sharing the Road
These safety tips for sharing the road with large trucks might be a lifesaver.
One of the most dangerous places to be on the road is right next to a tractor trailer. If the truck should lose control or need to suddenly change lanes, you will be unavoidable crushed. These large trucks do not have as much room for error as smaller vehicles and when they need to make a sudden move, surrounding cars are in a serious danger zone. Driving near these large trucks or even passing them, however, is sometimes necessary and unavoidable.
To keep yourself safe while sharing the road with semi trucks, remember the following:
- If you need to pass a truck, do so as quickly as you can manage. The longer you are next to the truck, the longer you put yourself in unnecessary danger.
- Watch out for truck tire blowouts. A tire blowout on a semi truck can result in the tire being ejected out from under the truck with enough force to knock a car off the road.
- Be careful of trucks that may have lost control. If you see a truck quickly change lanes or swerving due to something like a tire blowout, keep your distance. Create a safe cushion of space between your vehicle and the semi truck exhibiting dangerous driving behaviors. Once you are confident that the situation has become safe once again, you may try to pass.
These large trucks easily weigh 20 to 30 times more than a normal passenger vehicle. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Highway Loss Data Institute reports that 3,852 died in large truck crashes in 2015 alone. Keep yourself and your vehicle passengers safe by always being mindful when a large truck is driving nearby.
